These days, people are finding it increasingly difficult to keep track of what’s on their to-do list for any particular day or week. With the constant demands on time and often the sheer volume of information we are exposed to each day, it should therefore come as no surprise that many people don’t feel that they have the time to develop key workplace skills, such as Critical Thinking effectively. However, nothing could be further from the truth! There are lots of ways to train your Critical Thinking skills in only five minutes a day:

  1. Read the news and study discussions. Pay particular attention to the arguments being used: are they based on facts? Is a particular ‘spin’ being given to a situation? And what is the impact of emotions?
  2. Occasionally watch ads throughout the day. For example, TV commercials, online ads, and traditional ads in newspapers, magazines and billboards. Try to discover which techniques are being used to convince readers of the value of the advertised product, service, or event. Pay particular attention to ads that recently moved you to make a particular purchase.
  3. Look around and try to discover situations where Critical Thinking could be of added value.Don’t limit yourself to workplace discussions, but also consider events in your private life. Critical Thinking can even be surprisingly useful when doing things like deciding where to go on holiday next or designing your home or garden. The better you’re able to recognise your assumptions and realise that you just don’t know certain things, the more likely you will be to choose the right holiday destination or design.
